It puts the battle within the context of the Napoleonic Wars. There are clips from movies and reenactments of men firing cannon from the ship, which make this an interesting and exciting video to watch. Particularly interesting are the reenactors who portray Admiral Villeneuve and a British seaman, Robinson (aka Jack Nastyface). Both speak to the camera, saying things that the real life person wrote. There are also 3D graphics that show the movements of the ships. Also discussed are life aboard ship, battle tactics, types of shot and a host of other things. Commentary is by Dr. David Chandler of the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst. This DVD moves along at a snappy pace and I hardly noticed that an hour had passed. I highly recommend this video.

Gun Camera Review

I own dozens of war and aviation related documentaries, many of which are boring and monotonous. This is not one of them.

"Gun Camera" is a very interesting compilation of actual gun camera footage from World War Two, Korea, Vietnam, and the Gulf Wars. Historians, analysts, and pilots provide commentary for the footage, which includes strafing trains and bombing ships in WW2, aerial dogfights in Korea, bombing jungles in Vietnam, and using smart bombs to take out strategic targets in Iraq.

My only complaints with the production are, 1) the repetitive aircraft information, which, although interesting, doesn't have a lot to do with the footage (many of the deleted scenes are more interesting), and, 2) the realism that is lost when sound effects (guns firing and explosions) are added to the normally silent footage, with no acknowledgment made.

Regardless of whether those two things bother you or not, I would recommend this DVD. It kept me entertained for its entire 135 minutes.

I purchased this set as they have a feature on the B-24 Liberator which Grandpa served on. The set also includes the Thunderbolt, Fighters of the RAF, Defenders of the Reich, the B-17 Flying Fortress and the Mustang.

What the set does really well is present a complete picture. There is an overview of the aircraft, how the plane was used in combat and how this impacted the battles. There are also invterviews with veterans who experienced the battles.

Overall, a good set for those who want to remember what out veterans endured and accomplished to protect our freedom.

Pretty in Pink - 2 (medium)

Pretty in Pink is a classic love story of high school before and dance all night with Molly Ringwald as Andie, a girl from the wrong side of the tracks who falls for Blaine (Andrew McCarthy), a wealthy Preppie.

For those who grew up on the wrong side of the tracks are (in this group of film critics), Pretty in Pink made certain agreements, such as research on the homes of the rich and wondered what it inside, and the realizationyou never know, or are invited to the ball, then you cast the date.

I have this movie three stars, because part of the story is being dumped by his prom date of Blaine, Andie decides to dance alone, which requires not only courage to leave, but the integrity, the idea that the date that is not in control of your life.

Pretty in Pink mental collapse in two main ways. One, we are inclined to believe that Andie does not know that his best friend fromChildhood, Duckie is madly in love with her, and two, there is no real explanation why the date, Elaine, decided to take the ball.

We have reason to believe that it went because of his rich parents and friends to him with a girl from the wrong social class, Blaine is still a problem, is something we are never told what is another thing not specify the thread of the story, to communicate in any way not working together.

Andie turns out to be a girlTruth, courage and integrity. I might give some props to John Hughes, the writer who chooses a wife Andie grass substantive rather than a push. I think Andie, the girl on the wrong side of the tracks for a better life than Blaine, who have to live to overcome his social position to be discovered.

This video is better to settle for much of the same sex. I reserve the right to raise my opinion of this film at a later date, and only the force.

Saint Ralph is the story of Ralph Walker (Adam Butcher), a boy of 14 who are brought up by single mother. It has grown up without a father, who died as war heroes. Her mother is ill and falls into a coma, but has to live in his house only to tell the school authorities to the end, he lives with his grandparents.

As if his life is not so disturbed, is collected and landing times by his fellow Catholic school.

If you will notice that requiresOrphanage when his mother dies, a revelation that told him when he leads the miracle of winning the Boston Marathon, the mother goes out of the colon and recover.

You should see the movie to find out if he wins the Boston Marathon. Despite some technical problems and a small gesture, Saint Ralph, a film is well worth the time and effort to see because they are taught values, especially from a dream, a belief in your dreams, to dream and focusingdetermined to realize your dream.

This is a good movie with a positive message that is missing a great movie. There are problems with the audio expertise and knowledge could be solved. Ralph has a problem with the condition that the maturity and experience could be resolved.

The title (Saint Ralph), does not detract from a film lift much of the good. Miracle in the Making would be a better title to the establishment Ralph arms with the task to become a saint. The story is really too much ofto stretch the film but at least your heart and moisten your eyes.

I give this movie a 3-star ranking, because he deserves it, but just do not.

Michael Moore has to go far in Sicko?

After seeing Umminger speeches and finally I decided to go, the new film Sicko, Michael Moore's controversial. SiCKO attempts to privatize huge problems with American health care and insurance system, shows a series of extreme examples, using the finger at the wrong point to highlight insurance companies.

This film is shocking and sometimes very funny. Michael Moore manages to expertly push the audience in shock and you feel as if something must be done.I think it's a good idea, most people know is a nightmare and insurance companies in many peoples opinions medical care is simply too expensive, but I personally have had serious problems with some of the technical aspects of Michael Moore.

I was cynical about this film, as I did with any other offer to Michael Moore. It seemed to me that he once again addressed the issue of the unilateral and the average American, because he knew nothing to eat and has itsPropaganda quickly, as he believes that people have to eat the propaganda of the government!

His English prejudices I had suspected was confirmed. Moore) on his visit to England to take a look at the NHS (for our system of public health, painted a striking light that I would not be surprised if half the demand for U.S. immigration to the United Kingdom. The NHS is definitely a better system, I think the American system of insurance, but failed to mention the moneyProblems and delays and questions of cleanliness in hospitals are common. I can imagine that the French and Canadians who suffer painted in the same light systems under their fair share of outstanding problems.

Force 10 from Navarone [Blu-ray] Review

You really cannot go wrong with any movie that stars Robert Shaw, Harrison Ford, Barbara Bach and Edward Fox and this movie - although blasted by the critics upon its release really is a great action adventure war movie. In fact the Jimmy Carter White House picked the movie only weeks before its December 1978 opening to be the Thanksgiving movie to be screened at Camp David.
The movie was previously released on DVD in 2000 in what was a simply horrible transfer with scratches and print dirt all over the place. Even so I would watch it over and over again, reveling in a 1978-era nostalgia when, as a six-year-old, I would sit in the local town hall (which once a month was converted into a movie theater) wowed by the action unfolding on the screen.
The problems with that release have been mostly rectified for this Blu-ray release which is simply pristine in comparison. It's not the best Blu-ray release I have ever seen, with a large degree of softness and some grain but it does a good job recreating the film stock of the time and is certainly the best the movie has ever looked since its 1978 theatrical release. The Yugoslavian scenery in particular is breathtaking. I did not notice any of the problems that plagued the DVD release and, hey, who can argue with a Blu-ray that features the impossibly beautiful Bach in high definition :)
Many saw this as a disappointment due to its attachment to the Guns of Navarone, but if it is taken up on its own merits then one can see that this is really nothing more than a fun movie for funs sake, no serious character studies here and the movie is all the better for it.
The movie gets its title from the Alistair MacLean book of the same name, but bears little resemblance to the actual narrative of the novel. Indeed there had been plans to film this movie shortly after the 1961 original with Peck and Niven reprising their roles. Following the success of the original movie producer Carl Foreman asked MacLean to write a hardcover sequel novel on which a follow-up film would be based, but the author was reluctant to write an entire novel and instead delivered a screen treatment. The film was announced for 1967 but after the script got bogged down in studio development hell MacLean decided to develop the screen treatment as a book and "Force 10 From Navarone" was published in 1968.
Throughout the 1970s Foreman tried to get enough financial backing for the movie and eventually patched together enough money to finance the production from no fewer than five different international sources but by the time the movie finally went before the cameras (some 17 years after the original) it was thought that Peck and Niven were too old and the decision was made to recast. In an interesting footnote to this theory Peck and Niven would team up two years later in the excellent World War II action adventure "The Sea Wolves" in which they played retired veterans seeking one last hurrah.
Bond fans will notice a number of actors in this movie that had already occupied roles in the Bond franchise or would go on to appear in the series. In addition to Shaw (from "From Russia With Love") and Bach (who was fresh off playing the Russian spy Anya Amasova in "The Spy Who Loved Me") and Edward Fox (who would go on to play M in the rogue 007 movie "Never Say Never Again") there is also Bach's co-star from "The Spy Who Loved Me" Richard Kiel, who was riding high as somewhat of a cultural icon (hey, he appeared in a Shredded Wheat TV commercial) after playing perhaps the most famous 007 henchman Jaws.
I suppose the Bond connection is most apparent in the choice of director with "Goldfinger"'s director Guy Hamilton handling the honors. His sure direction shows his usual flair and expertise handling action that he so ably previously demonstrated in (perhaps the best of the early James Bond movies) the aforementioned "Goldfinger" and the World War II drama "Battle of Britain." Hamilton does succumb to some espionage cliches at times, such as when one of the characters stumbles across the traitor sending a message, but all of these instances are handled capably and add to the familiar nature of the plot.
As already mentioned the plot of the movie is also very different from the MacLean book, but some good Boy's Own adventure that actually flows slightly better than its literary namesake. Shaw (in his last movie role) plays Mallory (yes the same character that Gregory Peck played in the original) and he and Fox's character (who was played by David Niven in the original) are sent into Yugoslavia to identify and kill a traitor from the first movie. So, they hop a ride along with Force 10 (headed by Ford's character) who are headed to the same location with the mission of destroying a key, strategic bridge. Of course things do not go entirely to plan, and soon the action begins to come thick and fast.
Filmed on location in Yugoslavia, England and Malta the crew had to endure freezing temperatures and even a rash of kidnapping that led producers to limit the actors movements. Shepperton Studios in England (where the original had also been filmed) provided four soundstages for interiors and the largest studio tank in Europe (in Malta) was used to film the movie climax with a million miniature dam .
The one negative towards this Blu-ray release is the lack of special features. All we get is a trailer for the movie whereas the original DVD release featured an sketch (hidden as an "easter egg")and a collectible booklet with trivia notes.
A movie that would get a lot more respect if it didn't have the name "Navarone" attached to it. Incidentally here's hoping that the 1961 movie gets a Blu-ray release soon :)

Scott an Oscar®) in which he slapped two GIs in Sicily, accusing the war-weary men, one of whom also had malaria, of cowardice and forcing Allied leader Dwight D. Eisenhower to temporarily relieve Patton of his command.

All of this is presented by way of the same ingredients used in the earlier Battle 360 series, combining file footage (including silent clips of Patton himself), photos, CGI, occasional reenactments, expert analysis, and reminiscences of several men who fought under Patton. There is plenty of edifying history delivered, as well as detailed descriptions of strategy, tactics, and weaponry, especially tanks and artillery. But the episodes are also loud and kinetic to distraction, with a constant and relentless background of pounding music and sound effects, flashing graphics, and macho voice-over narration. National Geographic was given unprecedented access in order to produce their film on the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay and they took advantage of it to produce a documentary which does show what life is like for both the detainees and the guards who must serve inside the wire.

While not a 100% accurate portrayal of what goes on in the facility (the very presence of the cameras changes the behavior of the detainees) it is as close as it gets to seeing the inside of Gitmo without actually getting assigned to JTF Guantanamo Bay. Interviews allow the viewer to get a better idea of the issues which surround the controversial facility, including (unfounded) allegations of "torture," the problems involved with releasing detainees, and the legal responsibilities of the U.S. government. Lawyers for detainees, guards, military officers and even released detainees themselves all discuss issues which surround Guantanamo.

If the film has a weakness it is that the statements of former detainees are not more strongly challenged. For instance, the former Taliban "ambassador" to Pakistan stated something to the effect that Islamic scholars "studied and respected" the U.S. legal system prior to the long detention of detainees at Gitmo. This statement is absolutely absurd... the only legal system they study and respect is Sharia law. They hate everything else. I disliked the fact that this statement was not challenged.

Also, the implication that detainee treatment at Gitmo "radicalized" them is equally stupid. Jihadists were bombing our embassies, ships and the WTC (twice!) well before Guantanamo. The lawyers could have used some more scrutiny as well, in their statements that "they only wish to see due process" in the case of detainees. Many of these folks are antiwar and antiprison types and have agendas other than judicial.

My take? Could have been a bit better. But it could have been a LOT WORSE. Anyone who questions the mass media's template of Guantanamo Bay does so at their own risk. Just look at what happened to Miss Universe.

J.S.A. - Joint Security Area Review

J.S.A.: Joint Security Area's success was Park Chan Wook's license to make any film he wanted; this film was Park's (Vengeance Trilogy) breakout hit in South Korea, and even though he wrote the script for "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance" a few years before, "J.S.A." was made and released first. Most Korean political thrillers I've seen that delved into the tension between North and South Korea such as the popcorn flick "Shiri" and "Typhoon" often somewhat portray the South Korean side the "good guys" while the North Korean side are oftentimes take a darker light as the "bad guys". Park Chan-Wook's masterpiece, however, stays neutral on this situation and the film is truly something that goes straight to the hearts and emotions of its audience.

Synopsis partly derived from back cover:
In the Demilitarized zone that separates North and South Korea, peace is a very fragile thing, as fragile as the wooden bridge that links the two Koreas. When two North Korean soldiers are killed, supposedly by one South Korean soldier, it threatens to ignite a full-scale international conflict. An impartial Intelligence team led by a Korean female officer, Maj. Sophie Jean (Yeong Ae-Lee, Lady Vengeance) is sent to investigate and they quickly find flaws in the official report of the events. It's a race to uncover the truth as tensions rise in one of the most heavily guarded border in the world.

The film is an incredible tale of forbidden friendship that blossomed between border patrol soldiers that explores the consequences when something goes awry. J.S.A. is a powerful and complex film that explores the honesty and the beauty of being close and comfortable towards your countryman. It is truly an engaging film about camaraderie and loyalty. The film also delves into the ideals of the Korean people, from both sides of the border. The film may have some similarities to "Midnight Clear" with a powerful metaphor for the rest of the world. What makes J.S.A. so special is that there are no clear good guys and bad guys, no black and white; the main antagonist (or bad guy) is the overall situation between the two countries itself, and the political ramifications of the incident. The North and South Korean people are the victims of this tension; victimized by an invisible enemy that cannot be seen but felt in their hearts.

When I first saw this film in 2003, I wasn't really expecting much. I thought it was just going to be another political thriller and while it does begin that way; Park definitely sidesteps that impression by putting the central focus of the film on 4 soldiers, their budding friendship and relationship, who are divided by nothing but the border shared by two on each side respectively. The four soldiers are played by Kang Ho-Song (Secret Sunshine), Lee Byung-Hun (A Bittersweet Life), Tae Woo-Kim and Ha-Kyun Shin. It's no surprise that Kang Ho-Song and Lee Byung Hun gives a remarkable performance as well as a younger Yeong Ae-Lee; the solid performances by its cast are the film's greatest strength. Park's style of direction is that the timeline shifts from past to present and vice versa to unveil the supposed incident of the breakout and the secret friendship between the four. This was an ingenious but risky style in storytelling; it may become a bit blurry and inexperienced watchers may find it a bit confusing and maybe boring. However, Park effectively allows us to get a lot deeper into the psyche of the Korean people in my opinion. The actual investigation itself may be the film's weakness; as the proceedings seemed too simple and some "findings" were too convenient.

It's quite sad to witness the tensions of a nation separated by its ideals and very inspiring to see just how the soldiers overcame the hostilities between their sides and encourage each other to "breakdown the walls" of politics. These soldiers represent their people and their hope for reconciliation. This theme hits home to the hearts of its audience. Their slight fear of being discovered is portrayed as they spend the evening playing cards and bonding in their own playful manner. The differences between the two sides are also expressed in the form of a simple "cookie" or chocolate bars.

J.S.A. is an actual metaphor for the rest of the world. It is quite sad for a country to be divided by an imaginary line. It effectively expresses the idea that social and political differences, color and blood, race and beliefs should not be allowed to become the bane of brotherhood and friendship. These invisible lines are things that should be forgotten and disposed of much like the soldiers in this film who reached out and became friends. Despite the film's faults that some scenes "borders" almost to the point of becoming too melodramatic, the film is quite effective with its cinematography, story and theme, that the great performances reaches out to inspire us with its humanity and optimism. It's very hopeful and powerful message is its true human splendor.

In the game, the player controls the main character Jason Bourne. Everyone knows that the phenomenal movie Jason Bourne and their style of game action adventure game. Sierraconfirmed by a video game adaptation of the trilogy of Jason Bourne remarkable.

For two people who do not know, the film by Jason Bourne, all on a cooperative basis imaginary CIA named Jason Bourne. He has amnesia and tries to put together his life. This is very interesting.

Hitler's Jewish Soldiers tells the relatively unknown story of how some German men who were part-Jewish served in Hitler's army before the advent of World War Two and even during World War Two. In 1935 a German law went into effect that men who were partly Jewish ("mischling," which means "mutt" in German), could be drafted into the Nazi army that was out to destroy not only their Jewish relatives but the entire Jewish race as well. Although this is not the biggest story of the war ever told, German men who were partly Jewish did indeed serve in the German forces and thus, as director Larry Price states in his interview on this DVD, this documentary takes a "fresh look" at an aspect of World War Two that few people ever knew or even thought about.

The archival footage is very well laid out and we get the general history of how Germany would draft the "mischling" or boot them out of the army at their discretion. Some of the footage is a bit tough to take but most of it is not that graphic. In addition, the documentary focuses on the individual stories of five men who were all partly Jewish; and these men experienced harrowing, nightmarish days and nights for years at a time when they served as Hitler's soldiers. Their reward was survival; but sadly most if not all of their family members were killed in Hitler's concentration camps just like the majority of Jews were killed in that part of the world during World War Two.

I mentioned that the film focuses on the specific stories of five men in particular; and it does this very nicely. There is quite a bit of candid, recent interview footage of these five men which is invaluable since that age group is gradually dying off and not all of the men interviewed are still living today. We meet Werner Goldberg who was featured both in a Berlin newspaper and on a recruiting poster as being "the ideal German soldier." Hans-Geert Falkenberg was drafted into the German war machine despite the fact that he hated to have to join it; Helmut Kopp had to hide his religious belongings and photos of his family in order to survive in the German army and Ephraim Glazer secretly hid the fact that he was an orthodox Jew who had graduated from a religious school. Moreover, Arno Spitz has another remarkable story to tell--not just of his being in Hitler's army but also the story of what happened to him when he was captured by Americans near the end of the war.

The DVD is a bit short on extras but what we do get is very good. There is copy of a brief television interview with director Larry Price and there are still photos of German soldiers and others taken during the 1930s and 1940s. You can choose to view the photos one at a time or as a slideshow.

I recommend this movie to anyone studying the history of World War Two; people of Jewish heritage and even other backgrounds may find it interesting as well.

Doomsday Review and Spoilers

It's easy to say that "Doomsday" is simply a mix of "The Road Warrior," "Escape from New York," "Aliens" and "28 Days Later" and stop there. But these leaves so that the birth of a new hero showed that the payments they expect a few more.

Malcolm McDowell portrays the bitter Kane, the leader of a small medieval village, a lifestyle-conscious technology, low to avoid detection, takes over satellite. Kane was a doctor working with the research> Military before locking and the object of research Sinclair. But since he lost his family and everything that has suffered in the crash, Kane hates everything outside the walls of Scotland and refuses to cooperate with Sinclair. Once again, the actions within the village of Kane, in particular, had the modern era tactical combat warrior arena (Sinclair) against heavily armored knights Champion (Kane and executioner) in close combat. The fight is gratifying showcaseSinclair, better training, skills and abilities to defeat the rider.

Until last summer I had never seen a single episode of Star Trek on television, and I never had a movie, but many were not. However ...

I loved the new film - JJ Abrams really created a masterpiece here. He has not only transform the dense forests of the Star Trek universe into something entertaining, understandable for a movie from time to time, he also directed by the film and fun. I think one of the real strengths of the film is its modesty. He does not try to be tooserious. Sure, there are some very emotional scenes (the movie opens with a major tragedy), but on the whole, it's not as stressful as you'd think an intergalactic conflict should be.

Chris Pine (Bottle Shock, Smokin' Aces) does a great job entertaining and captivating the audience as James Kirk. Kirk is extremely arrogant, but he never comes off as annoying. Rather, he gets into amusing situations and, despite his pride, he eventually makes the right decisions, so he's a guy that the Public can easily cheer.

Portrayed In the meantime, Zachary Quinto (Heroes 24) Commander Spock Vulcan, half human, half Vulcan military and academic prodigy trying to skillfully bring their conflicting desires in harmony. He lives by the inexorable logic, a trend, like Vulcan, but also the emotion of the man and his character is very deep and fascinating.

We also see, John Cho, Zoe Saldana, Leonard Nimoy, Eric Bana and in leadership positions.

The story is veryinteresting - the galaxy is invading the Romulans, tries to avenge the destruction of the world (with some time travel shenanigans involved.) The Starfleet Academy will send a response team, led by the USS Enterprise and its crew, and followed a series of battles .

As expected, the film has many futuristic weapons, vehicles, travel, physical space in the open, and many other things that we only accept on behalf of science-fiction. Roaring Glory Warbirds, Vol. 3: Vought F4U Corsair Review

I'm not sure what I expected when I bought this... probably something along the lines of what you see on the `Wings' network - lots of scratchy footage of old planes with monotonous narration of specifications. But that's not at all the approach that this video takes. This is my first `Roaring Glory Warbirds' disc, but I ordered two more immediately after seeing it.

The roughly hour-long main program begins with our pilot-narrator standing before the Corsair. He takes us on a brief tour of the outside plane as he performs a pre-flight check of all of the important `parts,' and this alone was great! You get a close-up view of all of these details while a skilled pilot explains what he's looking for and why. Then he jumps in, gives us a tour of all of the controls, and takes the plane up!

It's wonderful seeing this classic machine actually in the air, not in a Hollywood film or old newsreel footage. The picture is quite sharp; the Dolby sound is wonderfully vibrant and great for that prop-engine sound. As the pilot does maneuvers with the F4U, he explains everything he's doing, eventually landing it.

The program then switches to a dramatization of a young pilot training for and then flying an F4U in battle. This was modestly but nicely done, too, and informative. It was interesting, for instance, to hear how flight manuals for these planes were so scarce that if a pilot could get his hands on one he would hoard it!

Extras on the disc include an actual F4U training film, which ran about half an hour. This was really interesting, too, on many levels: it explained aspects of the plane and how it should be flown in detail, and is also a time capsule of what kinds of training pilots received.

Other extras include a still photo gallery and pages from a Corsair flight manual reproduced on-screen, but this is the weaker part of the disc. This could have been much better if the disc's logo wasn't plastered across the top third of the screen, obscuring the images - I'm not sure what they were thinking here. Even better, I would love to have seen some of these diagrams reproduced in print form and included as an insert with the disc, though I realize that this would have added to the cost of the disc.

More information about the F4U's place in WWII warfare would have been appreciated, too. I would have given an extra star for this. As it is, this disc is more of a `here is the plane' presentation, with the added dramatization about the pilots.

I really wish they could add some British, German, and perhaps even Russian planes to this series, though I realize that the lack of availability of these planes may make this nearly impossible.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - a disappointment for fans of Die Hard?

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull receives 77% of the critics and 66% of the audience at Rotten Tomatoes Movie Community. Only 6% 'frightened, as spectators and is considered to be corrupt. Among a series of mediocre action film to be published recently, will be newcomers to the series in the action scenes enjoy intelligent, very quick return of archaeological history. The bad and the KGB Colonel Dr. Irina Spalko (Cate Blanchett), a chick with heavy military and just as hard, black bob and a strong Russian accent, and his team of Soviet agents, seeking possession of the legendary Crystal Skull, the equipment is the weapon of the future in mindCheck.

Marian Ravenwood (Karen Allen), takes her role as love interest Indies (Raiders of the Lost Ark), and she and Love Child Indies, Henry "Mutt" Jones III (Shia LaBeouf).

Action
The action scenes are some of Spielberg's best, including a memorable car chase through the Amazon jungle, with high-speed sword, the car driving dangerously close to cliffs, impressive the explosion, the metal cutting wheel, and a cloud of super-intelligent Killer RedAnts. We have to forget the part where "Mutt" oscillates between the trees with a group of monkeys.

The only drawback is that the film sometimes seems incredible set, and recalls one MGM studio set up.

Acting
The best part is that Harrison Ford does not want Indies as "old". There are many funny moments, the mocking India as "the old man." Fans will not be compelled to the belief in and say that Harrison Ford is not to imposeseventy!

Allusions are made that Shia LaBeouf (Mutt) may or may not be the future of Indiana Jones when the hat is symbolic and Indiana about the placement on the head (only get ripped indie alone). Sorry, Shia LaBeouf, intimate film, the viewer as a sweet boy, so it seems neither comfortable nor credible as a "bad guy". Maybe Will Smith?

Karen Allen (as Marian) is a welcome addition by a little "spicy and nostalgia.And everyone knows that no film in the Indiana Jones flick is complete without a love story.

The lesson of history
The story behind the Crystal Skull is not as deep or impressive than the first three films in the biblical history and mythology of India investigated. And although many have thought, even if it seem exotic, and sometimes up.

Consensus
Although not as good as the first three, you'll be glad that you've seen.

This is an excellent movie about the Siege of Tobruk during WW2 and some of the Australians who fought in it. A true classic and if you're a fan of war movies, it's a must buy!!

The Desert Rats Overview

In his second Hollywood role (between Oscar-nominated turns in My Cousin Rachel and The Robe), Richard Burton stars as a Scottish commando put in charge of a battalion of the 9th Australian Division defending Tobruk. The Aussies don't like him, and with a year of grim North African duty already under his belt, he's not too crazy about his new responsibilities either. The outfit is charged with staving off the battering assaults of Field Marshal Erwin Rommel for two months, to give the British Army time to regroup in Cairo and prepare for a counterattack. In the end, the "desert rats" play hell with the Desert Fox for 242 days, during which they and their commander develop some mutual respect.

This is a solid, workmanlike World War II picture that, having been made in 1953 rather than 1943, can acknowledge a degree of eccentric humanity and soldierly professionalism in the enemy. Featured guest star James Mason reprises his Rommel from The Desert Fox (1951)--playing all his scenes in German except for a scene of ironical repartee with Burton. Another distinguished Brit, Robert Newton, gets costar billing as a boozy, self-confessed coward who used to be Burton's schoolmaster once upon a time. However, a goodly number of Australians--including Chips Rafferty and Charles "Bud" Tingwell (still going strong nearly 50 years later in Paul Cox's wonderful Innocence)--rate at least as much screen time. Robert Wise directed, with a trimness that reminds us he started out as an editor, and the pungent black-and-white cinematography is by Lucien Ballard. --Richard T. Jameson

Kevin Costner plays a war veteran who has returned to civilian life. He is having a difficult time adjusting after the horrors of war. Such experiences are later recounted in the film. As the title suggests, the war is a key factor in the lives of the people in the film. But the title also serves as a metaphor for the war that becomes part of the lives of the people at home in their everyday struggles.

Kevin Costner and Elijah Wood's characters are part of a poor family whose interactions with a neighboring family are tenuous and disintegrating. The young daughter sees the institutionalized racism her friends have to deal with on a daily basis. The types of issues that they all deal with are the ones that would leave many of us with gut wrenching dilemmas. Lashing out and confronting some of the situations would mean overstepping bounds and in some cases engaging in violence. The failure to do so would result in defenselessness and in some cases danger.

The family learns examples from the war veteran who will spend his life wondering whether he made the right decisions in the war and from his refusal to place his personal safety above his sense of duty to those around him because of it.

This film is well acted and features beautiful cinematography. The HD release is stunning both with respect to clarity and artistry.

Others have commented that this may not be appropriate for children because of the violence and difficult themes. My children range in age from 11 to 16, and I did not find that to be an issue. However, they were bored to lukewarm at best when watching it. This may be one to watch without the kids before you decide whether it's right for them.

The War Overview

Kevin Costner is the big name here, but the film belongs squarely to Elijah Wood, who plays his son. The film deals with the children of a Vietnam veteran in 1970 Mississippi; as their dad (Costner) tries to cope with posttraumatic stress disorder after serving in the war, the kids build a mammoth tree house in the woods--then must defend it against the local white-trash bullies. The film includes a particularly harrowing contest involving a swim across the reservoir of a decrepit water tower; still, director Jon Avnet can't avoid a certain "can't we all just get along" didactic message. That doesn't put a damper on the youthfully natural quality of the child actors, and Costner is actually quite winning as a sensitive, troubled soul. --Marshall Fine

Civil War Journal - The Conflict Begins Review

The History Channel's "Civil War Journal - The Conflict Begins" is a collection of four episodes detailing some of the significant events prior to and during the early days of the American civil war.

Each episode is 43 minutes in length and is a self-contained documentary focusing on one particular subject, person, or group. Each episode provides a very nice summary of the event and/or people involved and the corresponding effect on the overall war. Although the episodes are arranged in chronological order, they can stand independently and can be watched in any order without affecting your understanding of the material.

Danny Glover lends his voice as the narrator of all four episodes and keeps the story flowing. (He really can't pronounce the word "Massachusetts," though, which is a little grating on the nerves during what was otherwise my favorite episode - the one titled "The 54th Massachusetts.") Comments are liberally provided from various historians, particularly the well-known William C. Davis, author of the recently released "An Honorable Defeat: The Last Days of the Confederate Government."

Having recently become interested in civil war history, I bought this DVD set hoping it would be a useful and quick refresher course that would provide a general background into the major events of the war. Definitely not disappointed, I constantly found myself realizing that not only was the series a good refresher, it actually was quite entertaining. The episodes are very well written, unfold with quite a bit of drama, and contain a surprising number of interesting little-known facts (at least they were new to me).

I'm looking forward to further releases of the "Civil War Journal" series and will certainly add them to my library.

Two young Chadian friends get swept up in revolutionary fervor in Chad in the 1970s. Their village is pillaged by government soldiers looking to collect an unjust tax, and the men decide to join the revolution against the government to hopefully improve the living conditions of their families and neighbors. They begin the revolution as idealistic soldiers, but after several victories and defeats, their views become more nuanced and complex, ultimately diverging until a sudden and surprising twist at the end. There is really alot to like about this film. I had never seen a film made in Chad before and I found this film fascinating if for no other reason than it offers a `Chadian' slice of life view into their society. The viewer will gain some small insights into village life in Chad, family relationships, etc. The cinematography is outstanding as well, there are lots of great shots of the beautiful, austere landscape of Chad. Even beyond the local Chadian issues though, the themes discussed in this film are really timeless and I think appeal to a wider audience whether you have any particular interest in Chad. What choices do we make when reality doesn't conform to our naive idealist image? Does the revolution continue even if we are not soldiers actively fighting? How can we, more generally, best serve our families and our societies? This is a low-budget film, but I view this as a strength. The focus of this film is on dialogue, themes, and cinematography, not lots of special effects (if you are looking for an action film about a guerrilla war, this isn't it). The only negative about this film is that the acting, particularly by some of the minor players, is extremely stiff. A minor complaint though, this is a good film and definitely worth a look.

Yes, some of the archival footage is a little scratchy, but it is real combat footage and includes rare scenes of Tigers in combat showing their employment in battle. Green Dragon Review

Powerful, provoking film full of raw emotions. The story plods along very slowly and what it lacks in plot it more then makes up for in splendid acting and story telling. You will be a better person for having watched it.

This is a new kind of role for Patrick Swayze, who is still a terrible actor, in my opinion... thus 4 stars and not 5. But, he's not dancing with a doctor's daughter, he's not blowing anything up, instead he's a kind-hearted but stern marine sergeant who's been put in charge of a Vietnam refugee camp and finds himself more involved with the lives of the camp members then he ever expected.

We become familiar with a small handful of the refugees and the pain and loneliness they are feeling. Families have been torn apart, loved ones lost, children left orphans, husbands and wives lost forever. But at the same time, we also see the heeling also starting. New relationships begin, new love is found, old wounds heel, and most importantly, the newly arrived refugees begin to understand the potential of life in America and look forward to finding a "sponsor" so they can leave the camp and begin life in a new world.

This is no action packed thriller, or even an academy award winning drama, but it is most certainly a movie that will tell a story you most likely knew nothing about before, and will leave you more open minded, educated, and compassionate. I would recommend watching as a double header, to be followed up with a light-hearted romantic comedy.

The Germans just took over France in the price of gas is $.28 a gallon yet our story takes place in Martinique in the Southwest Indies. Harry Morgan (Humphrey Bogart) and out of work fishing boat owner is finally faced with making a decision. Harry's sidekick Eddie (Walter Brennan) inadvertently goes along for the ride. Soon everyone gets involved including Marie 'Slim' Browning (Lauren Bacall) a young lady who is down on her luck and just passing through.

Besides some heavyweight actors, this film also has some major name writers and director producers behind it. Into this new music from Cricket (Hoagy Carmichael), is a major background character in the film.

Of course, the film came out years before Blu-Ray yet many of the remastered versions make it feel like it was just written yesterday. The copy watched had an added 10/10/46 radio play of "To Have and Have Not."

The History Channel's Pearl Harbor Review

This DVD set is great. It has excellent footage of the attack on Pearl Harbor and there is interviews with people who survived the attack and there is even interviews with some Japenese fighter pilots who bombed the ships. It starts at 1939 when the USA decide not to enter The Second World War and goes through the attack on Pearl Harbor and ends at today showing the USS Arizona Memorial. The Set also has a bounus disc with a lot of Pearl Harbor facts as well. This is an amazing DVD and anyone who is interested in USA history should buy it.

A Full Review Of The Second In Command Movie

Set in turmoil infested Moldovia; a photographer captures the anti American sentiments outside the hotel where he stays in the Second in Command movie. As a response to the unrest, the U.S. embassy sends a military attaché to Moldovia. Guess who is the military attaché known as Commander Samuel 'Sam' Keenan? It is none other than the infamous martial arts expert cum actor; Jean Claude Van Damme a.k.a. JCVD. In the movie, he plays a U.S. Navy Seal & what have you extraordinaire, basically a very tough character (as usual) in the Second in Command movie, bursts into action to save the day. Oh Gosh! It seems that I may have already said, the whole story!

Commander Samuel (Jean Claude Van Damme) meets with his mistress, journalist, Michelle Whitman (Julie Cox), in a hotel, where the chaos began to unfold. A shooter enters the hotel and shot a journalist at point blank and others. However, Michelle is unimpressed and calls persistentlythat they remain in the hotel. The hero goes to the U.S. embassy and tells her that he comes back, they must apply. Have now, in my opinion he should just her at the embassy in the first place and got her things are drawn in the future. It is not how the story goes in the Second in Command movie.

Have to wait now Commander Samuel (Jean Claude Van Damme) and his compatriots in the message to four hours until the army of the Moldovan government, comes the message. Furthermoreevacuation helicopter, the Marines and Support Unit in Croatia was sent on the basis of the U.S. embassy in Moldova. However, suggests the CIA agent in the embassy for the immediate evacuation and the concept is supported by all, with the exception of Commander Samuel. The evacuation plan fell into a trap and a busload of innocent civilians were in the second command in the air blown film. Michelle (Julie Cox) is in a dilemma when she realized planted a bug was found by the Moldovan militia on their clothes, resulting in theon the death of civilians.

In a final stand off against the Moldovan militia, which are now supported by insurgent forces Moldovan government, the remaining U.S. Marines, one of them played by Razaaq Adoti (er cp-favorites in Resident Evil: Apocalypse), the U.S. Embassy , to fight the very end. The Moldovan militia as idiots, when their APC trying represented (IFV), against two U.S. military attack helicopters. Michelle (Julie Cox) alwaysit is possible to go in the wrong place and Samuel to his wife to find it again. After he had helped to save the day is, she smiled sheepishly, as if nothing in the movie Second in Command had happened or it was like it was just one end of a roller coaster ride for them. The lady looks like a beast in the heat and could not stop staring, Commander Samuel (Jean Claude Van Damme), who inevitably gets the usual ego boost of victory.

Great comedy? Um, no. But some damn funny moments and a chance to hear David Rasche do an 'R' rated version of Sledge Hammer??? YEAH!!!

Regardless of what's been said, this film DOES have its moments and can be watched quite easily when you're just in a silly mood (have a few shots first - well maybe more than a few). If you can get into some of the stupid crap that Chevy Chase and Dan Aykroyd released, you can surely get into this. Hey... it has SLEDGE HAMMER! in it!!! Come on, PEOPLE!!!

It is not often in life we see living legends. Sir Edmund Hillary was such a man. His performance was apparent ascent of Mount Everest, but this was only the beginning of an amazing life.
